How Severe Is My Criminal Charge?
In general, there are three categories of criminal charges that you could be faced with. It’s important to be familiar with these three categories of charges so you can better understand your specific case.
The three categories of crimes are called violations, misdemeanors, and felonies, with felonies as the most serious charge and violations as the least serious of the three charges. Violations do not result in any jail time or incarceration, and examples of violations include traffic violations (like speeding tickets), jaywalking, littering, public intoxication, etc. Misdemeanors on the other hand can result in a punishment of up to one year of jail time. The length of jail time depends on the severity of the crime. Examples of misdemeanors include petty theft, marijuana possession, trespassing, etc. Finally, felonies are the most serious criminal charge you could face and can result in over a year of jail time. Examples of felonies include murder, kidnapping, arson, etc.
Once you are more familiar with the circumstances surrounding your case and your criminal charge, you are in a much better position to pick a criminal defense lawyer who is best suited to represent you in court.
